Makela was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She studied intensely ballet, modern dance, jazz and tango in Buenos Aires and Los Angeles. Her tango performances include presentations at the Museum of Latin American Art, the Doolittle Theatre, the Ford Amphitheatre and The Conga Room among others.
